5 Secrets Of Downsizing No One Wants You To Know

Homeownership was once hailed as part of the everlasting American dream. With mortgage rates climbing higher than the Burj Khalifa and the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to throw a wrench in everyone’s fire, priorities have shifted. Apartment rentals are in high demand – particularly among those looking to downsize as a result of the new normal. With downsizing comes time, patience, and skill. So, without further ado, here are five secrets of downsizing no one wants you to know.

1. Take Inventory Of Your Valuables

Hold on there, partner. Before you start packing the goods, it’s probably best to make sure they’re accounted for. We’ve mentioned the importance of this in a previous blog, but it’s worth repeating. Keep track of your treasures using a home inventory software like Collectify– unless you’re a wiz with Excel.

2. Have A Toss/Take Party

That’s right. Invite your loved ones, put on your favorite playlist, break out the chardonnay, and get ready to par-tay (safely, of course)! If the items are not sentimental in any way, place them in a pile labeled ‘toss’. Flooding a landfill isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, so if the items can be reused, find your local Goodwill donation center. If they hold significant value and/or are sentimental, place them in a pile labeled ‘take’. We’re getting Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha vibes just thinking about it! Who said downsizing can’t be fun?

3. Map Out The New Pad

Once you’ve found your dream apartment, it’s important to work the floorplan to your advantage. Sure, our apartments are spacious. But why not have your cake and eat it too? Minimize the potential for clutter by checking out space-saving solutions like The Container Store. If you still have some extra stuff that serves no immediate purpose, several of our properties offer secure storage units at no extra cost to you.

4. Cope Effectively

You’ve done the planning. You’ve done the moving. But that’s only half the battle. For many, downsizing and grief go hand-in-hand. It’s completely normal to feel a sense of loss. With an abundance of mental health professionals in our area, you’re sure to find one that can help you cope. Take care of your mental health. Take care of you.

5. Live Your Best Life

The fear of change is hardwired into the human psyche. Downsizing isn’t the end of the world. It’s just different. Thankfully, there’s a simple life hack to better smooth the transition: Stage your apartment to look like your old dwelling. Need to have that painting on the living room wall and directly above the couch? Go for it. Is the wine rack facing the kitchen table a must-have? Do it. Whatever it takes for you to live your best life, our beautiful properties offer plenty of room to work. The well-maintained pools and fitness facilities are just an added bonus!
